Our Story

Brochure - Inside Front Cover.jpg

The Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, used the native silver fern plant, whose fronds are dark green on the upper side and silver underneath, as path markers for traversing a forest at night.

When laid silver side facing up, a frond glows brightly in the moonlight, providing an illuminated path that can be followed.

Hunting parties could move unobserved through the bush at night as the first man in the party would lay fronds silver side up and the last man would turn them back over as he passed.

The clever use of a simple thing, becomes a powerful tool and forms the basis of a smart strategy that provides clear direction towards mission achievement.

Inspired by the Maori, we chose the name SilverLeaf to highlight that while bonds, like fronds, are basic things, the use of a simple and effective strategy can consistently guide the management of a bond portfolio towards stated purpose and organizational mission achievement.

Our evidence-based research has learned that complex and speculative investment strategies continue to be THE largest source of risk to portfolio purpose and a significant source of risk to organizational mission.

Unfortunately, the negative consequences from such strategies are ultimately borne by taxpayers and their communities.

“The ideas and principles on which SilverLeaf was founded were a long time in the making and are the result of much thought and effort, personally and professionally.

Every day we work harder to be better than the day before. To learn more, to think harder, to push beyond the ordinary.

We do so in order to provide ideas and creative solutions that can help organizations achieve their stated mission in an increasingly chaotic and uncertain world.”

Investment Philosophy

We believe that adopted investment strategy has the potential to be the largest source of risk to individual goals or organizational mission achievement if it is not directly aligned with them.

We believe that speculative investment strategies increase costs – strategy outcomes which can compromise individual goals or organizational mission.

We believe the following steps are essential to building a non-speculative and appropriate portfolio for income-focused investors – one that is directly aligned with portfolio purpose, goals and mission:

  1. Clearly articulate goals or mission – exactly what is to be accomplished by using interest income generated by the portfolio.

  2. Detail principles or fundamental rules which will govern what is desirable in an investment strategy.

  3. Identify a thoughtfully constructed and clearly defined non-speculative investment strategy that is directly aligned with goals or mission

  4. Outline clear, unambiguous and objectively measurable steps taken to achieve goals or mission

Simply put, strategy matters.
